An honest, firsthand review of our all-inclusive honeymoon at a 5-star resort in South Ari Atoll, the Maldives

The Maldives was the final stop of our three-week honeymoon through Egypt and the Maldives. After an incredible journey through Egypt, it felt like the perfect place to unwind, take in everything we had experienced, and simply be. Six nights on a tiny island in the South Ari Atoll, surrounded by turquoise water and with nowhere we needed to be, felt like the perfect way to end our honeymoon.

It was my first time in the Maldives, so I don’t have an experience with ten other resorts to compare it against. What I can do is tell you precisely what our stay was like, what I loved, what caught me off guard, and where I’d temper your expectations.

One thing worth clearing up first: the resort was previously known as Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives and became Meliá shortly before our stay, so if you come across older reviews or maps under that name, they’re describing the same property.

Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives Review: At a Glance

We stayed six nights in a Beach Villa on the sunrise side, on an all-inclusive package, as part of our honeymoon at this 5-star resort in South Ari Atoll.

The resort is relatively small, with around 100 villas and suites across beach villas, overwater villas, and sunset suite villas with private pools. That intimate scale quickly became one of my favorite things about the whole place. Even when the island was busy, it rarely felt like it. There were so many moments when Luca and I had a whole stretch of beach, or an entire pool area, more or less to ourselves.

If I had to compress the stay into a sentence: the villa, the food, the spa, and the deep sense of privacy were the highlights, and the one thing that didn’t quite match the picture in my head was the amount of marine life in the shallows right around the island. Would I recommend it? Depends to who and their priorities. If you’re a couple who wants a quiet, beautiful resort with good food and somewhere to properly switch off, yes. But more on that below.

Why We Chose Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives

We actually discovered the resort through Luca’s brother Alessandro and his girlfriend Micol, who had stayed there in August before us.

Micol had already visited several resorts in the Maldives and is also a scuba diver, so I trusted her opinion. Then they showed us their pictures, and the detail that sealed it for me was, of all things, the bathroom. It was gorgeous. I know, a dumb detail, but I’m a sucker for beautiful bathrooms.

From there I did what I always do and lost hours comparing resorts online, and I kept circling back to Melia Whale Lagoon because, in the price range we were looking at, the villas were among the most beautiful I had browsed, the food seemed great and the island seamed peaceful. When you fly this far and spend so much of the trip at the resort itself, I wanted the room to feel special. So it was really the combination that won us over: warm word-of-mouth about the food and service, plus rooms I fell for on sight.

Where Is Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives? (South Ari Atoll)

The resort sits on its own small island, Bodufinolhu, in the South Ari Atoll, right beside the South Ari Marine Protected Area, a stretch of ocean famous for year-round whale shark and manta ray sightings. It’s one of the best regions in the Maldives for the big marine encounters if you go out looking for them.

The island itself feels intimate rather than sprawling. You can walk around it in 15 minutes so you’re not arriving on one of those enormous resort islands where you need a buggy to get from your room to breakfast (although there is a buggy available).

There are 2 restaurants, 2 bars, two large infinity pools, the spa, a dive and water sports center, and two different beach areas, and yet the whole place stays comfortably walkable. More than that, there are corners where you can look up from your book, glance around, and genuinely feel as though you have your own private speck of land dropped into the middle of the Indian Ocean. That feeling of seclusion, of the island somehow being yours, is a huge part of why I liked it.

Getting to Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives: The Seaplane Transfer

Melia Whale Lagoon uses Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) for its seaplane transfers, which happens to be the largest seaplane operator in the world, so we felt we were in very safe, very experienced hands. The moment we landed at Malé, there was a representative waiting in the arrivals hall holding a sign with our name on it. From there we were helped through the seaplane check-in, driven by minibus to a separate wing of the airport where the seaplanes leave from, and settled into a lounge to wait for our flight to be called. Our wait was about 45 minutes, though the resort had warned us in advance that because TMA runs shared transfers and sets its own schedule around the day’s international arrivals, waits of up to two hours can happen. It’s worth holding that possibility loosely in your mind.

The flight itself takes about 35 minutes, and it is pure wonder. You lift off, and almost immediately the ocean below starts unspooling these tiny rings of white sand and impossible turquoise, atoll after atoll scattered across the blue, and I just kept saying wow, out loud, like a child. That was the exact instant it truly landed for me that we had made it to the Maldives. The plane stopped to drop off some guests at a nearby resort before dropping us at ours. If it’s your first time in the Maldives, I’d take the seaplane over a boat every single time it makes sense. Arriving this way is half the magic.

When we touched down at Melia Whale Lagoon, staff were waiting to welcome us, and we were walked straight to reception, handed a cold drink and a cool towel, and talked through how the island worked and what our honeymoon package included before being taken to our villa.

A few practical seaplane notes:

At the time of our stay, the transfer was included in our package but we had to prepay the charges in advance to secure the transfer (we paid $445 net per adult but the price is subject to change). We had sent the resort our arrival and departure times in advance but you should send your complete flight details at least 7 days before arrival so the resort can arrange the best transfer.

Something quite important to take into consideration when you’re organizing flights is that seaplanes only fly in daylight, so your international arrival time matters. For arrival, transfers can be arranged for international flights landing in Malé between 6:00 am and 3:30 pm.

Another important details to keep in mind is that checked baggage on TMA was around 20 kg per person plus 5 kg of hand luggage, with excess charged directly by the carrier.

Our Beach Villa at Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives

I’m delighted to report the villa was every bit as beautiful in person as it had been in Alessandro and Micol’s photos.

We had a Sunrise Beach Villa roughly in the middle of the long row of them, we were in number 111, close enough to reception to be easy but far enough to feel calm. If I could’ve picked my own room number, I would’ve gone with the 114 – 116, it felt a touch more tucked away.

Inside, the room was large and open, Maldivian style, with a large bed, a generous closet, that beautiful bathroom, and sand basically at the door. The design is relaxed and beachy without tipping into rustic, so it felt luxurious while still belonging completely to where we were.

But the part I think about most is the patio. Outside our villa we had a table, sun loungers with an umbrella and a hanging daybed, a sort of sofa swing, and it became my favorite place on the entire island. There was shade, a soft breeze coming off the water, and the endless, close sound of the sea, and Luca and I fell asleep out there more times than I can count. You’d lie down meaning to read a chapter, and the next thing you knew an hour had gone. It was complete, unapologetic relaxation mode, and it’s one of the first images that comes back to me whenever I think about the Maldives now.

Beach Villa or Water Villa: Which Should You Book?

The resort has overwater villas too, and I know that for a lot of people those are the definitive Maldives fantasy. Personally, I wanted a beach villa, and I’d choose one again. I loved stepping straight off our terrace onto the sand and into the sea, which felt so much more connected to the island than being suspended out over the lagoon. A beach villa also felt a little cooler to me, and easier for the constant in-and-out of swimming, whereas with the overwater villas you’re really paying a premium for that private water access off your deck.

Would I try an overwater villa one day? Of course. But I honestly wouldn’t call it an automatic upgrade. It depends entirely on the kind of Maldives you want. If sand underfoot, a real beach at your door, and that private-island feeling appeal to you, the beach villas are wonderful. Also, when it gets too hot to be in your own bungalow, it’s nice to know you have your own stretch of sand rather than having to find a spot in the shared areas.

Sunrise or Sunset Side at Meliá Whale Lagoon?

The beach villas are split between the sunrise side and the sunset side, and going in, I’ll admit I probably would have chosen sunset. Alessandro and Micol had stayed on the sunset side and loved it, and there’s an obvious romance to watching the sun go down from your own terrace. Sunset was fully booked for our dates, though, so we ended up on the sunrise side, and here’s the thing: I loved it.

The biggest practical difference was the water. On the sunrise side, it got deeper more quickly, which meant we could actually swim in front of our villa (although it was windier on this side). On the sunset side, the water stayed shallow for a much longer walk out before you could properly swim.

Tides and conditions vary, so take this as our experience rather than a hard rule, but getting into swimmable water more easily turned out to be something I valued (though, as I explain later, this is still very much a shallow-lagoon island).

So which would I book next time? Possibly sunrise again. If watching the sunset from your villa is the priority, request the sunset side. If easy swimming matters more, choose the sunrise side. Either way, email the resort in advance to request a location rather than leaving it to chance. We sent our preference ahead, though requests are always subject to availability.

What Is the Food Like at Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives?

I’d heard plenty of mixed stories about all-inclusive food in the Maldives, especially the classic complaint that it turns repetitive after a few days. Over six nights, I thought the food at Melia Whale Lagoon was good.

I’d call it a premium-quality all-inclusive for travelers who enjoy international food. If your idea of great holiday cooking is Italian food that tastes like home, that’s a different conversation. But we eat a lot of Asian food and travel often through Southeast Asia and were happy.

Sea Salt: The Main Restaurant

Sea Salt is the main restaurant and the heart of the dining. You can eat indoors, but my favorite tables were outside, and my absolute favorites were the ones set right on the beach. There’s something wonderful about dinner with your feet in the sand, a couple of little lights on the table, and very simple, pretty linen. A server takes your drink order at the table, and then you help yourself from the buffet stations.

And the buffet rotated across the week rather than repeating itself. One night leaned Southeast Asian and Indian, another was paella, another Mexican, another Brazilian, so there was a real sense of a theme shifting each evening. The first night especially caught us off guard, in the best way, because the Asian and Indian dishes were so full of flavor. There were plenty of stations to graze across, and there are also live cooking stations, where you can have chicken, meat, and tuna cooked to your liking right in front of you, so it never felt like circling a tired buffet with a plate.

Breakfast was just as generous, with fresh omelets and eggs made to order, more cooking stations, and a big spread of fruit, pastries, and juices.

Lunch at the Bars: Breeze and Magical

Beyond the Sea Salt buffet, you can also eat at the resort’s two bars, Breeze and Magical, which sit at opposite ends of the island and each run their own, different menu. They serve food until 5pm, and on the all-inclusive plan you’re entitled to two dishes per person, with anything beyond that charged to your room.

Luca and I ended up heading to the bars for lunch almost every single day, and it was one of my favorite parts of the whole all-inclusive. I kept ordering the tuna tataki and the guacamole, and the tuna in particular was exceptional. It sounds like a small thing, but over six days it wasn’t: having someone bring you beautifully fresh food while you sit beside the water is a completely different holiday from circling a buffet three times a day.

Breeze sits by the main pool and reception on the sunset side, while Magical is down by the sandbank and water sports center, the quieter end of the island.

Aqua: The à la Carte Restaurant

Aqua is the resort’s à la carte restaurant, and it’s one of the things the premium plan opens up. We got to eat there through our honeymoon package, and we ended up going twice. It’s a more intimate setting than Sea Salt, fewer tables, with a menu that changes. Luca had a fillet, I had a tartare one night and pasta another, and it was all very good. Having that à la carte option on top of the buffet and the bars meant we never once felt like we were eating the same way twice.

The Bars

The two bars aren’t only for lunch. One of them sits beside the main pool and reception, on the sunset side, by a lovely beach with loungers, umbrellas, and bean bags, and we went there for drinks on our very first evening, watched the sun drop into the sea, and it was a gentle, beautiful start to the whole holiday. Some nights there was a live DJ, and the one we caught was genuinely excellent. The fact that Luca, I, and about two other girls appeared to be the only souls willing to dance is a separate story.

Meliá Whale Lagoon All-Inclusive: Standard vs Premium

There are two all-inclusive tiers here, and it’s worth understanding the difference before you book, because it’s not just marketing. The gap between them comes down mainly to the drinks, and whether you can dine at the à la carte Aqua restaurant. The premium plan gives you access to Aqua and a wider, higher-end selection of beverages. The standard plan, which is what we had, still lets you eat well.

Beyond the main Sea Salt buffet, the standard plan also lets you eat until 5pm at the two bars, Breeze and Magical, which sit at opposite ends of the island and each run their own, different menu. On the all-inclusive you’re entitled to two dishes per person at the bars, and anything beyond that is charged to your room.

On drinks, the standard plan covers a lot. Milkshakes (although tasted more like syrups), soft drinks, cocktails, wine, and spirits are all included. The one thing to know is that it’s by the glass, not the bottle. With wine, you don’t pick a specific label; you say red, white, or rosé, and they bring you whatever they happen to be pouring. If you want more premium bottles or higher-end spirits, you can order those for an extra charge. The mojito was good!

I found the whole all-inclusive formula really good. The food was high quality, varied, and international in flavor, and, as I said, the Indian and Asian nights were my absolute favorites.

The Quiet Side of the Island

If you take one image away from this review, let it be this one, because it’s the one I hold onto.

At the far end of the resort, next to the water sports center and a sandbank, there’s Magical, the second bar and pool area, and it was the most peaceful place on the island. For whatever reason, almost every time we wandered down there, there was practically nobody around. There were bean bags and loungers, and these little shaded structures you could lie beneath, and I would settle in with my book and simply stay. Shade over me, the wind coming steadily off the water, that impossible turquoise stretching out in front, and near silence. I read for hours. No music, no crowd, no schedule, just the pages and the breeze and the sound of the sea doing its thing.

Snorkeling and the House Reef at Meliá Whale Lagoon

I want to be completely straight here, because if there’s a single part of the stay that let me down, this is it. And it is an important one I loved the food, and I loved how genuinely pretty the island was. But the reef and the snorkeling honestly disappointed me.

Start with the swimming itself, because it caught me off guard. The whole resort is ringed by a lagoon with a very shallow bottom, and in many spots you have to wade out a long way before the water is deep enough to actually swim. It is not the step-off-your-deck-into-deep-water fantasy you might be picturing. This is also where the sunrise-versus-sunset choice comes back in, since we found the sunrise side dropped off a little sooner, but make no mistake, this is a shallow-lagoon island wherever you are on it.

Does Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives Have a House Reef?

Yes, but here’s the crucial detail: the house reef isn’t something you swim out to from the beach. You reach it by boat. One of those excursions is complimentary, and the rest cost extra. The resort does lend you snorkeling gear for your whole stay, which you return at the end, and that’s a nice touch. But the marine life in the shallows around the island was much quieter than I’d dreamed.

We did see some, and parts of it I adored: lots of baby reef sharks, especially near the beach by the water sports center, and I could have watched them for hours, sitting at the water’s edge following these little sharks as they slipped through the shallows chasing schools of fish, because I truly adore wildlife. We saw various tropical fish while swimming, and some triggerfish too, though thankfully it wasn’t nesting season so they left us in peace. But I never saw a turtle around the resort, and no rays came in close to shore.

I want to be fair, because I’ve only snorkeled in a handful of places and this was my first time in the Maldives, so my expectations may simply have run ahead of me. But my parents and my brother, who have stayed at other resorts here, all came back describing far more marine life than we found, so I don’t think it was entirely in my head.

So here is my honest steer. If you’re coming for the PADI diving, the food, and pure relaxation, Melia Whale Lagoon is lovely and I’d happily send you. But if what you’re really after is exceptional snorkeling and abundant marine life straight off the beach, I would genuinely look at other resorts before booking this one.

Diving and Water Sports at Meliá Whale Lagoon

Here the region really earns its reputation. The resort sits right by the South Ari Marine Protected Area, famous for whale sharks and manta rays, and there’s a proper dive center alongside a good spread of water sports.

Micol, as I mentioned, is a scuba diver, and her love of the water here was part of what drew us in. I’m a far more casual diver, but I went out for a dive with the resort’s dive center during our stay, and I really enjoyed it. The instructors were relaxed and reassuring, clearly in love with the ocean, and they made the whole thing feel easy rather than daunting. I also chatted with several guests who were completing their certifications while we were there, and every one of them raved about the team. If diving is a priority for you, this is a strong base, and the surrounding waters are about as good as the Maldives gets for the big encounters.

The Nurse Shark Excursion: The Thing I Wouldn’t Repeat

Luca really wanted to see nurse sharks, so we booked one of the excursions on offer, and this was the single experience I personally didn’t enjoy.

After a fairly long boat ride, we reached an area with a platform where bait was being thrown into the water. A very large number of nurse sharks had gathered around it, with rays and other fish circling beneath. The guides gave us thorough safety instructions and we got in. There were undeniably a lot of sharks. But it didn’t feel like the kind of wildlife encounter I value. I much prefer seeing animals behaving naturally, not clustered around bait, and the whole scene felt closer to an aquatic zoo than a wild moment. That simply isn’t how I like to meet animals.

To be fair, this is the only nurse shark excursion I’ve ever done, so I can’t tell you how it compares to the many others across the Maldives, and I’m not passing judgment on all of them. I just wouldn’t personally choose to repeat this particular one.

The Mandara Spa at Meliá Whale Lagoon

I completely fell for the spa, which is a Mandara Spa, built around Balinese traditions across a handful of treatment rooms.

We had a discount on a couple’s massage through our honeymoon package, and we enjoyed it so much that we booked a second one before we left. The whole ritual is lovely. You arrive to a warming ginger tea, then you’re walked through what feels almost like a lush garden to the rooms. Ours had two massage beds side by side, and the two therapists were excellent. The Balinese massage was, in a word, fantastic. The fact that we went back for another says more than any adjective I could reach for. If you enjoy massages even a little, leave room in the budget for the spa here.

Is Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives Good for a Honeymoon?

Yes. As a Maldives honeymoon resort, it suited the final leg of ours. I would recommend it for a honeymoon centered around privacy, food, slow moments, not so much on snorkelling.

We’d spent the earlier part of the trip traveling through Egypt, and while that wasn’t a punishing itinerary, arriving somewhere whose biggest daily question was swim or read felt like exactly the right way to close things out. The small scale of the resort was ideal for a honeymoon. We never felt lost in crowds or big groups, and yet there were enough restaurants, bars, and different corners that no two days felt identical, all while keeping that precious sense of a secluded island.

For the honeymoon package, the resort asked for a copy of our marriage certificate in advance, and the offer applied to couples traveling within twelve months of their wedding. Ours included arrival amenities, a bottle of sparkling wine, two dinners at Aqua restaurant, a bed decoration, and a spa credit toward a couple’s treatment, plus the complimentary snorkeling gear for the stay. These offers change constantly, and will almost certainly be refreshed after the renovation, so check the current package when you book rather than leaning on ours.

Meliá Whale Lagoon Renovation: What’s Changing and When It Reopens

Here’s the part that makes this review a little unusual, and, I think, more useful for it.

The Whale Lagoon I’ve described here is the resort in its early Meliá days, and it has closed for a comprehensive renovation and product enhancement program. From the information I’ve seen, the resort stopped welcoming guests on August 16, 2026 and is scheduled to reopen on March 1, 2027. In plain terms, this is a property that spent years as Barceló, rebranded to Meliá, and is now being refurbished more deeply to fully become what Meliá wants it to be.

From what’s been shared, the renovation is set to include new accommodation options, enhancements to selected villa categories, a brand-new signature restaurant concept, service excellence training for the staff, and enhanced marine and lifestyle experiences for guests.

The thing I loved most about Whale Lagoon was how uncrowded and private it felt, that sense that a beach or a whole pool corner was somehow mine. My one real hope is that adding new accommodation doesn’t chip away at exactly that intimacy, because it’s the soul of the place. I’m genuinely curious about the rest: a new signature restaurant sitting alongside Sea Salt, whatever the Mandara Spa becomes, and above all what enhanced marine experiences might mean.

Is Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives Worth It?

I’d recommend this 5-star, all-inclusive resort most strongly to couples and honeymooners looking for a beautiful villa, good food, a small resort, and plenty of privacy.

I’d be more cautious if your number one priority is extraordinary snorkeling straight from the beach or a spectacular house reef you can reach without a boat. There are resorts in the Maldives that are famous for exactly that, and I’d compare your options carefully.

Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives Review: FAQ

Was Meliá Whale Lagoon previously Barceló Whale Lagoon?

Yes. It operated as Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives before rebranding to Meliá. Older reviews and maps referring to Barceló describe the same island.

Is Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives currently open?

From the information I’ve seen, the resort closed for renovation on August 16, 2026 and is scheduled to reopen on March 1, 2027. Always confirm the current status directly with the resort before booking, as dates can change.

What is changing in the Meliá Whale Lagoon renovation?

The program is set to include new accommodation options, enhancements to selected villa categories, a new signature restaurant concept, service excellence training for staff, and enhanced marine and lifestyle experiences.

How many nights should you stay at Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives?

We stayed six, which felt just right. It gave us enough time to sink into the island’s rhythm without starting to feel restless.

Is Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives all-inclusive?

Yes, with standard and premium tiers. We were on the standard plan, which covered meals and a wide range of drinks, including alcohol, with a premium tier available for a broader beverage selection and access to the Aqua restaurant. Always check exactly what your rate includes, since packages change.

Is the food good at Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives?

In my experience, yes, and it was one of the strongest parts of the stay. The highlights were the themed dinner buffets and live cooking stations at Sea Salt, the varied breakfast, and the à la carte lunches at the bars, especially the tuna tataki.

Can you snorkel directly from the resort?

Only up to a point. The island is ringed by a shallow lagoon, so you often wade out a long way before you can swim, and the house reef is reached by excursion rather than from the beach. One reef excursion is complimentary and the rest cost extra. We saw baby reef sharks and various fish in the shallows, but the marine life right off the beach was quieter than I’d hoped. If abundant snorkeling straight off the sand is your top priority, I’d compare other resorts first.

Is a sunrise or sunset beach villa better?

Both have their case. The sunset side gives you the sunset from your terrace, while during our stay I found the sunrise side better for swimming, since the water got deeper sooner. I ended up loving the sunrise side.

Is Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives good for honeymooners?

Yes. We stayed for our honeymoon and received honeymoon amenities after providing our marriage certificate, including sparkling wine and fruit, romantic dining, a bed decoration, and a spa credit. Offers change, and will likely be refreshed after the renovation.

How do you get to Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives?

By Trans Maldivian Airways seaplane from Malé, a roughly 30-minute flight the resort arranges around your international flight times.

What did you love most about Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives?

The privacy and the quiet. A beautiful beach villa with a swing I kept falling asleep on, food that outdid every low expectation I had of an all-inclusive, a spa worth going back to, and one shaded corner by the sandbank where I could read for hours and feel like the island was mine.

What honeymoon benefits do you get in the Maldives, and do you need a marriage certificate?

The majority of Maldives resorts offer complimentary honeymoon perks, but only if you can show a recent marriage certificate, usually dated within 6 to 12 months of your wedding. Typical benefits include sparkling wine or champagne on arrival, fresh fruit or a flower and bed decoration, a romantic dinner, and a spa credit or discount, though the exact package varies a lot from resort to resort. These perks are rarely automatic: tell the resort you’re on honeymoon when you book, and email a copy of your certificate in advance. At Meliá Whale Lagoon, the offer applied to couples traveling within twelve months of their wedding, and once we sent our certificate ahead we received arrival amenities (sparkling wine), romantic dining, a bed decoration, a spa credit toward a couple’s treatment, and complimentary snorkeling gear. Always confirm the current offer directly with your resort, since these change often.

How much is the seaplane transfer to Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives?

The seaplane is included in the package. As a guide to its standalone value, charges were around $445 net per adult and $300 net per child (from August 2025, subject to change). Trans Maldivian Airways operates it, the flight is about 30 minutes, and the resort recommends prepaying at least 30 days before arrival. A Green Tax of USD 12 per person, per night is settled on arrival.
