A romantic weekend getaway to Italy’s city of love
We’ve all heard about Shakespeare’s tragic love story – Romeo and Juliet – but a romantic weekend in Verona is everything but tragic, unless you’re part of the Capulet or Montague families!
If you’re travelling through Italy, this little gem in the Veneto region cannot be missed. Why? It’s full of history, it has a lovely historical center, the food is great, the wine is to die for, and the whole atmosphere is just romantic. Don’t think twice, just get your train ticket and get to Verona!
Start by walking in the beautiful cobbled-stoned Piazza Bra with its gorgeous Arena di Verona, home to international concerts and historical exhibitions. And if it’s winter time, Verona is even more beautiful.
A must-see is the lovely Castelvecchio, where you can also get a great view of the river. Purchase a ticket to visit the beautiful museum, home to important paintings, sculpture and sketches from great Italian and European artists such as Tiepolo and Tintoretto.
Afterwards, head back towards Piazza Bra, where just a stone’s throw away you will find a lovely restaurant and wine bar, Signorvino. Here, order some delicious cold-cuts and cheeses or one of the daily specials such as riso venere with shrimps and zucchini, yummy! And if you’re a wine enthusiast, you’ve hit the jackpot, as you’ll be surrounded by outstanding wine, champagne and prosecco bottles. Have a chat with the sommelier and see which wine pairs best with your meal, and if you really like wine, don’t stop yourself form purchasing some bottles!
After lunch, head to Verona’s renowned shopping street, Via Mazzini, filled with mainstream and high-fashion boutiques such as Armani, Trussardi and Furla, and don’t forget to stop by the department store, where all the designer brands are showcased.
And if you want to see Juliet’s famous balcony, make a right turn onto Via Cappello, where you can enter her house and take your picture in the famous picturesque balcony.
For a coffee or hot chocolate, head to the magnificent Piazza delle Erbe, surrounded by small caffes and wine bars, and enjoy your tea while overlooking this beautiful piazza, filled with the winter market during the holiday season.
By now you’ll probably want to rest, so head to your central hotel and relax. But don’t forget to have made an advance reservation to the delicious Enoteca Segreta, because this restaurant cannot be missed on your romantic getaway! Hidden away, Enoteca Segreta is the perfect place for an intimate dining experience. The dimmed lights and beautiful cozy design set the tone immediately. Order the cheese selection and gnocchi con ragut di gallina or the tortelli ripieni con salmon affumicato, just perfect. And to accompany your meal, the passionate sommelier will surely know the perfect wine bottle.
For an after-dinner drink, head back to Piazza delle Erbe, where you’ll be wrapped around in a dynamic atmosphere.
