Where to ski near Rome
Winter is an amazing season: skiing, snowboarding, hot cocoa, fireplaces and red wine. What’s not to like? Plus, we Romans are truly lucky to have such beautiful skiing locations in close proximity. We may not have the Dolomites, but the Apennines have some great skiing resorts to offer, too! And when wintertime arrives and you feel like skiing or snowboarding down some snowy slopes, know that Rome offers great skiing locations nearby. Plus, from Rome you can go on a skiing day trip and come back in just a few hours. So get ready for some winter fun, go down those slopes, stop for yummy food at one of the rifugios and don’t forget to get a bombardino!
Roccaraso (Abruzzo)

Located in the Abruzzo region, just a two-and-a-half-hour ride from Rome, you’ll find Roccaraso–the most extensive skiing resort in central Italy. The landscapes are enchanting and there are over 130km of skiing slopes ranging from blue, red and black slopes that connect the areas of Rivisondoli, Pescocostanzo and Pescasseroli. While there’s been lack of snow in the past few years, they’re equipped with artificial snowmaking machines. Be sure to check out their website for info on how many slopes are open! In case of little snow, the best place to go is Roccaraso Aremogna which is at the highest altitude.

Less than two hours from Rome you’ll find the Ovindoli skiing resort, located in the stunning Sirente-Velino regional national park. This place is know for its amazing views and lifts that rise up to an altitude of 2,200 meters on Monte Magnola. There are a variety of slopes for beginners, intermediate and expert skiers and snowboarders. If you’re an expert skier, be sure to try il Pistone! Ovindoli also has a very efficient snowmaking system, which guarantees perfect quality snow.
Campo Felice (Lazio)

Another popular skiing resort near Rome is Campo Felice in the Sirente-Velino regional natural park. It’s only 115km from Rome so in just an hour-and-a-half drive you’re on the skiing slopes! This ski resort is part of the Tre Nevi area, along with Ovindoli and Campo Imperatore. They have great snowmaking machines with 250 artificial snow cannons covering over 16 kms, ensuring great skiing even in lack of natural snow.
Other skiing resorts near Rome
Of course the resorts listed above aren’t the only ones where you can ski near Rome. Some other great skiing resorts are Campo Imperatore perched on the Gran Sasso Mountain, being the resort with the highest altitude near Rome (also in the Abruzzo region); Terminillo – a.k.a. “the mountain of Rome” due to it being frequented by Romans – offers something for everyone (Lazio region) and mostly red and blue slopes; Monte Livata is the closest skiing resort to Rome, just a few kilometers from Subiaco–while there aren’t as many slopes as other skiing resorts, it’s very convenient and is found within the Parco dei Monti Simbruini.
